It’s natural to explore your options if you are unexpectedly pregnant, and one of the best things you can do before making a decision is to gather all the facts and risks so you can make an informed choice.

Understanding your pregnancy details, such as how far along you are and the location of the pregnancy, is important because this information can affect your options and identify whether additional medical care is needed.

Women’s Care Medical Center provides free on-site pregnancy testing and limited obstetric ultrasounds, along with accurate information about abortion, its risks, and your other options.

Risks of Medical Abortion

A medical abortion is a two-drug process that uses mifepristone to block the hormone progesterone, which is needed to continue a pregnancy, and misoprostol, which causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

The abortion pill is approved only through ten weeks of gestation, according to the FDA.

Some risks of a medical abortion include:

  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • An incomplete abortion, which may require a surgical procedure

An ectopic pregnancy can also go undetected without a prior ultrasound. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus. This condition cannot be resolved by taking abortion drugs. Timely medical treatment is needed to prevent serious, even life-threatening, complications.

Risks of Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion, also known as dilation and curettage (D&C), is performed in a medical setting and is often used later in pregnancy.

This procedure removes the pregnancy from the uterus by dilating the cervix and using medical instruments with scraping or suction.

The risks of a surgical abortion include:

  • Perforation of the uterus, where surgical instruments may poke a hole through the uterus
  • Injury to the cervix, which may need pressure or stitches to repair
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall, which is known as Asherman’s syndrome
  • Infection
  • Risks related to anesthesia or sedation, if those are used during the procedure

Why Your Pregnancy Details Matter

Before making any decision, understanding key details about your pregnancy is important.

At Women’s Care Medical Center, we provide limited ultrasounds to confirm whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus, how far along the pregnancy is, and that the pregnancy is progressing. All these details can affect your health and options.
