Pregnancy can be intimidating at first. If you are extra intentional along the way, you can learn to maintain both your physical and mental health and wellness. Though it’s not easy, we want to offer some insight and tips on pregnancy while staying healthy in your mind and body.

Staying Active While Pregnant

Fitness may seem like a scary word if you’re not regularly active. It’s never too late to incorporate movement and walks into your everyday routine. Your body will thank you if you begin while pregnant.

Due to the influx of pregnancy hormones and their effects on your body, staying active is essential. Here are some practical steps that can help you feel good:

  • Get adequate sleep
  • Make sure to get sunlight exposure
  • Eat good nutrition (lots of fruits, vegetables, & vitamins)
  • Drink lots of water!
  • Stay active/exercise (start with walking every morning/day & stretching)
  • Incorporate mobility exercises (flexibility/stretching/strengthening)
  • Find healthy stress relief

You are more likely to experience more mental health struggles if you do not meet your basic needs daily. It’s important to remain strong physically, as it directly affects how you feel mentally.

Mental Health & Pregnancy

Some women face major mental hurdles, like anxiety and depression, along their pregnancy journey. It’s estimated that roughly 7% of women experience significant depression during pregnancy, and symptoms of depression might include:

  • Excessive anxiety about your baby
  • Low self-esteem, such as feelings of inadequacy about parenthood
  • The inability to experience pleasure from activities usually found enjoyable
  • Poor response to reassurance
  • Poor adherence to prenatal care
  • Smoking, drinking alcohol, or using illicit drugs
  • Poor weight gain due to a decreased or inadequate diet
  • Thoughts of suicide

If you’re pregnant and experiencing any signs of depression and anxiety, get the support you need from a mental health professional.
