How Can I Heal Emotionally?

It may take longer to heal emotionally than physically after an abortion. The sadness and disappointment can be overwhelming. Allowing yourself to grieve is crucial to your healing.

The Cleveland Clinic talks about the five stages of grief:

  • Denial means you have difficulty accepting the loss
  • Anger is the next step once the loss is realized
  • Bargaining is the “if onlys” that roll through our minds
  • A loss of hope and confusion can follow depression
  • Acceptance comes when you learn to live with the loss

There is no set timeframe for each stage. You cannot just “move on” or “get over it.” You deserve to take each step at your own pace.

If your grief becomes too difficult to handle, consider one of the following:

  • Reach out to those closest to you—don’t be afraid to ask for comfort and support
  • Seek professional counseling—you don’t have to face it alone
  • Give yourself more time
