What is the abortion pill and how does it terminate a pregnancy?
The abortion pill, also called a medical abortion, is a process of ending an unwanted pregnancy using two pills, mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone is administered to prevent the body from absorbing the hormone called progesterone. Progesterone is necessary to support the pregnancy, and without the ability to absorb it, the pregnancy will end.
The second medication, called misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours later and is used to expel the pregnancy tissue from the womb through a process of bleeding and contractions.
Who is eligible to take the abortion pill?
According to the FDA, the abortion pill should only be taken in the first 10 weeks, or 70 days, of pregnancy. If taken too late in pregnancy, the abortion pill may result in an incomplete abortion, which can cause infection, pain, and other health issues.
To determine the age of your pregnancy, you’ll need an ultrasound scan. An ultrasound scan will not only determine the age of your pregnancy, but will also identify other concerning health conditions and give you new insight into your unique pregnancy.

Yes — there are side effects including cramping, bleeding, nausea, fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and exhaustion. Some women experience severe health risks, such as hemorrhaging, infection, and sepsis.
